CBD Dosage and Strengths: How Much Should You Take?
One of the most common questions we get is simple: how much CBD should I take, and which strength should I choose? The honest answer is that there is no single dose that suits everyone. The right amount depends on you, the product you are using and how your body responds. This guide explains how CBD strengths work, how to choose one, and how to find the amount that suits you.
Is there a standard CBD dose?
There is no official recommended dose of CBD, and no single amount that is right for everyone. The Food Standards Agency’s current advice is that healthy adults keep to around 10mg of CBD a day from food supplements, a figure it cut from 70mg in late 2023. We will be straight with you: we think the current advice is far more cautious than real-world use. Clinical research has used doses in the hundreds of milligrams, and in our experience since 2018 most regular users settle somewhere between 25mg and 100mg a day depending on strength, format and experience. Whatever you choose, the sensible approach is the same: start low, stay consistent, and adjust until you find what suits you.
Understanding CBD strengths
Strength is simply how much CBD is in each serving, measured in milligrams. It varies a lot from product to product:
- CBD oils come in different percentages, from gentler oils up to high-strength ones. The label tells you the total CBD in the bottle.
- CBD capsules give you a fixed amount per capsule. Ours come in 40mg, 80mg and 120mg, so you can pick a strength and know exactly what you are taking each time.
- CBD isolate is close to pure CBD, so it is easy to measure precisely with a fine scale.
How to choose your strength
A simple way to think about it:
- New to CBD? Start with a lower strength, such as a 40mg capsule or a gentler oil, and see how you get on.
- Already take CBD regularly? A higher strength like 80mg or 120mg can be more convenient, so you take less to reach the same amount.
- Want to fine-tune? An oil lets you adjust drop by drop, while capsules keep things simple and consistent.
Whichever you pick, build up gradually rather than in big jumps.
Dosage by product type
- Oil under the tongue lets you fine-tune drop by drop. See our guide to taking CBD oil under the tongue.
- Capsules give a fixed, pre-measured amount every time. Our guide to CBD capsules covers the 40mg, 80mg and 120mg options.
- Isolate suits people who want to measure precisely or make their own products. See how to use CBD isolate.
How to adjust and track
Keeping a simple note of how much you take and when makes it much easier to find your feet. Give any change a little time before adjusting again, and remember that taking more is not automatically better. Consistency tends to matter more than chasing a bigger amount. Our guide on how long CBD takes to work explains what to expect on timing.

CBD strength and dosage FAQs
How much CBD should a beginner take?
Most people start with a lower strength and a small amount, such as a 40mg capsule or a gentler oil, then build up slowly from there. There is no need to rush.
What strength CBD should I choose?
It depends on your experience. Newer users often start around 40mg, while people who take CBD regularly may prefer 80mg or 120mg for convenience. Start lower and adjust to find what suits you.
Can you take too much CBD?
It is sensible not to overdo it. Start low, build up gradually, and if you take any medication or have concerns, speak to your doctor first.
Should I take CBD every day?
Many people take CBD as part of a daily routine, and being consistent makes it easier to keep your amount steady day to day. What matters is finding a routine that works for you.
Does taking more CBD work better?
Not necessarily. Taking more is not automatically better, which is why starting low, staying consistent and adjusting gradually tends to be the better approach.
